Well there is a twist in this love tale as it wasn’t the prince who came in search of sleeping beauty instead the girl ran across the airport for her man!

1990, Mumbai International Airport

Returning from his first International cricket tour was a 17 year old lad who was sighted by a pretty girl in orange T-shirt. Waiting there to receive her mother with no knowledge what so ever about the fame that the boy holds, she saw nothing but him, as her friend explained about the wonder boy of Indian cricket team.

Finding him ‘cute’ she ran behind the boy screaming his name and forgetting all about her mum’s arrival. With his head hanging low the boy much to his embarrassment got into the car without even a second glance.

The wonder boy was none other than Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, a personality who has made every Indian proud and the girl in orange was his wife Anjali Tendulkar, back then Anjali Mehta an aspiring medical student. Anjali Tendulkar age is 54 years as of 2022, she was born on November 10, 1967.

The beginning of Anjali and Sachin’s love story

The launch of ‘Playing It My Way’ took a small trip to the past accounting for the days of Master Blaster that is not widely known, his days as lover boy.

Continuing her journey down memory lane, Sachin wife, Anjali revealed when got hold of Sachin’s number and called him up the very next day and introduced herself as the girl from airport, she rejoiced at the fact that he actually took notice of her, when asked, he clearly remembered what she wore, an orange T-shirt!

Running into one another at a common friend’s place they got to know each other better as Anjali tells what he liked about her was, that she knew nothing about cricket or even knew who Sachin was when they first met.

Though Tendulkar wife claims she was destined to meet the love of her life even on several occasions before this like the time when her father asked her to come and watch the youngest Indian to score a century, if she had agreed then, she tells, she might have been chasing a 15 year old Sachin. Sachin Tendulkar age is 49 as of 2022 and Sachin Tendulkar birthday is on April 24.

Love without broadband or smartphones

Living in an era where smartphones were just in paper Sachin Tendulkar and his wife Anjali worked hard to keep in touch.

With Sachin going on international tours, Anjali had to cross 46 acres at night when ISD rates were low just to hear his voice. So writing letters was their only go which took days to reach and weeks to get a reply.

Sachin also recounts an incident during the launch of “Digibank app”, how he had to travel all the way back to Bandra from Worli to call Anjali if she was late for their date and again go back to JJ Hospital to meet her where she studied and lived.

The hide-n-seek

Dating a Star cricket player was no work of mere mortal. Anjali talks about an incident where the two of them with some friends had gone to watch the movie Roja and to avoid interruption and not to attract attention Sachin had disguised himself in specs and a false beard but to their dismay, the fans surrounded him the second the specs fell during intermission and they had to leave the movie halfway.

It wasn’t just Sachin who has tried disguise during their dating life. Anjali for the first time visited Sachin’s house disguised as a journalist, too cute you say!

The climax

May 24, 1995 the day this beautiful love story took a form of a marriage but to get there Sachin, 21 then, says.

“Talking to my parents about Anjali and us getting engaged was much tougher than facing the fastest bowler”.

So he asked Anjali to break the news to his family when he was in New Zealand for his match.

Even with the age gap between the two they say it’s never been a issue rather has added meaning to their relation. Anjali stating that she has never known anyone in her life except Sachin and understand him so well and Sachin confessing that she is his confidant and the reason that he thanks God for all he has given him only shows their love for each other.
Sachin and Anjali have two lovely kids Arjun Tendulkar and Sara Tendulkar.

As a cricketer’s wife and managing a family Anjali has never regretted her decision not to pursue full time career as paediatrician. Even with Sachin wanting to be more involved with his children Anjali saw to it that he never loses his focus on game and this being a reason she is rarely in the stadium for he must not be worried about their accommodation and arrangements.

Anjali mentioned how her life comes to halt when it’s her husband’s turn on the field. Their relationship has faced many hurdles and still after 21 years of marriage they stand strong.

The off field life of the god of cricket is rarely discussed by him but this eternal bond between the two is an inspiration to many and a true fairy tale indeed for they lived happily ever after.
